The planting design in the top image on this page looks very formal, and quite stiff feeling. Given that this is going to be the civic space for Walthamstow, it seems to me that it is important for it to convey a sense of open-ness, dialogue, transparency. It could also be more playful. What about using the 1:20 incline of the grass at the front for stepped grass and it acting as something of an amphitheatre.

What aspects of the local area’s identity and history do you want to see reflected in the future of this new neighbourhood?

It's got to take its cue from the name Fellowship Square. So William Morris and the values he espoused of beauty and utility. Given the context of the climate and nature emergencies we are living through, the design needs to speak to those values in a contemporary way. Walthamstow has a fantastic community that is pretty liberal and generous, and the design should seek to further foster that.

What are your priorities for the green and open spaces around your new civic space? How can we sustain these for future generations to address the climate emergency?

As above, suggest a stepped grass area to act as an amphitheatre type space, on the part going down towards the Assembly Hall. This could then be an outdoor performance space. Suggest planting the right plants! Eg do we need a 'rain garden' (thinking Sheffield example)? Another idea for the sloping grass area at the front is a 'meadow' with meandering paths mown through it, with saplings planted too, while having a feeling of a somewhat playful, informal space, that people can easily cross.

What uses and activities would you like to see in your new neighbourhood at the heart of the borough?

As a parent, I would like to see a playground area, but different from that in Lloyd Park or other parks. Something wooden, similar to that at Kew Gardens. Something interactive. If the overall space becomes more focused as one for the performing arts, then it could be a playground with more interactive musical elements. I don't know what the needs of older children are, so can't contribute on this. I'd like to see it as a central hub for the cargo bike borrowing scheme that the council runs. It could be somewhere where those with mobility issues are able to be taken for rides in cargo bikes (https://cyclingwithoutage.org/) if there were a route around the site, with things of interest to look at - public sculpture, a nice garden to pause in. Similarly, it could be a space where cyclists learn how to ride - whatever age they may be.

What are your priorities in terms of getting to, moving around and how this new neighbourhood interacts with its surroundings?

It needs to be as 'permeable' as possible, with the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users, at its heart. It needs to feel safe and have the least number of cars / service vehicles possible.

This is a huge opportunity for Walthamstow to create a space that the community needs - a community that is living through a climate and nature emergency. This space should seek to address those issues head on. It is the civic heart of the borough and needs to feel accessible to all those who live here. The beautiful Assembly Hall points to a suggestion that the performing arts could be a focus of the identity of the space, along with the civic aspects.

The images on this page are pretty vague. Maps with some unidentifiable coloured areas on and some photos of past events which obviously don't need this development to go ahead because they have already happened... It all sounds and looks fancy, but if you are removing trees you need to think again.

What aspects of the local area’s identity and history do you want to see reflected in the future of this new neighbourhood?

It would be great to see a bit more 'Forest' put back into the deforested Waltham Forest.

What are your priorities for the green and open spaces around your new civic space? How can we sustain these for future generations to address the climate emergency?

Protect and maintain MATURE TREES. Plant more trees. Protect and expand green space. Rewild green space. Reduce pollution by offering zero carbon transport infrastructure. Educate the population about the Climate Emergency. Plant trees.

What uses and activities would you like to see in your new neighbourhood at the heart of the borough?

Food growing. Local markets selling seasonal food and sustainable products. Inclusive space for community use and to support community groups.

What are your priorities in terms of getting to, moving around and how this new neighbourhood interacts with its surroundings?

Cyclists and pedestrians should be prioritised in any transport infrastructure decisions.

Do you have any other comments?

50% affordable means the other 50% is profit driven/unaffordable. This is disgusting. To spend council taxpayers money for 50% profit-driven housing development is scandalous. If you are going to fell trees and bring plant machinery into the area to build homes, homes should be 100% affordable. And, where is the money to be spent on other areas of the borough? I live in E11, which lacks the investment and consideration that Walthamstow Town Hall is getting. Redistribute the funding across the whole borough.
