What are you commenting on?: Chestnut Field Open Space. What uses or activities would you like to see here in your future civic space?: For exercise activities, a future objective to include, subject to agreement by relevant stakeholders, a new concrete skate park facility, in Chestnuts Field. A skate park is a place where people of all ages, ethnic groups, and genders, can come together to enjoy physical activity and socialise. They provide a safe, fun environment for children or teenagers (and older), to spend their leisure time with multi-wheeled activities, including riding a skateboard, BMX bike, scooter, in-line skates or rollerskates. Which of these principles would your idea fit under?: Health and fitness for young people (Comment submitted by the founder, Friends of Chestnuts Field)

The inclusion of some simple skateboard-friendly obstacles would be really great for the area. The anti-skateboarding stance of many public areas in London is making it an increasingly difficult city to skate. Given the current boom in the popularity of the sport, the development of more facilities would be greatly beneficial to the younger generations. Examples of skateboard-friendly architecture (not the same thing as skate parks) can be found by looking at Hull, Copenhagen and the CityMill Skate project in East London.

I would like to see skateable architecture, as this provides a safe, engaging and inclusive activity for people of all ages races and genders, and helps to improve physical health and promote ideas of community.

What is the plan for the water feature? Previous plans had a play fountain. Is this still going ahead?

I am also strongly for the inclusion of skate-able architecture within this space, especially as local skateboarders have created a legacy for their creativity within this space across a number of years. Looking forward, the popularity of skateboarding is ever-increasing, both in terms of the wider diversity of skateboarders using Lloyd Park locally and it becoming an Olympic Sport on a wider scale. In March 2020, I finished my undergraduate dissertation which explored an array of perceptions regarding how skateboarders used public space, focussing specifically on Gillett Square in Dalston, Hackney. Through questionnaires, interviews and naturalistic observation, I discovered that there is a predominantly positive public perception of skateboarding as a use of public space. I will be very happy to share my findings with you and if possible, discuss this further alongside the Lloyd Park Skateboard Group.
